The Tomorrow War Review
I guess I'm a sucker for this kind of movie.

A war movie with aliens, time travel, family drama, and the ongoing fight to prevent the end of the world. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and it applies to this film pretty well. Take any alien invasion or time travel movie tropes, and it’s here . You can throw Prometheus and The Thing in it as well, but just because it rips off all those other movies doesn’t mean it can’t be entertaining as hell.
Chris Pratt stars as your average Joe with a family living a boring life in the suburbs until soldiers from the future interrupt a soccer game to bring people from the present to fight against an alien invasion in the future. The most ridiculous part of that plot is people watching soccer. Pratt is essentially drafted to join the war leaving his family behind to fight for the future.
When I saw the trailer for this, I had no expectations. It looked like a typical, generic sci-fi action movie, and it somewhat is, but there’s a lot more than advertised. This movie surprised me. It’s a quality production with excellent action, great visual effects, some humor, and effective drama. It reminded me of many other movies like Starship Troopers and Edge of Tomorrow, but I think it stands well next to them.
The aliens are very well designed as well as being pretty intense and vicious. They remind me of the Arachnids from Starship Troopers, and just like that movie, they don’t stay in the dark too long. Usually, with alien and creature features, they’re kept in the shadows until that big reveal, but not here. They introduce them in one of the film’s best action sequences. I wouldn’t say their biology or origin is unique. It’s pretty basic, but it doesn’t detract from the movie at all.
This movie’s cast is also pretty good. Chris Pratt has been a leading man before, but I think this might be his most convincing lead. I buy his character and all of his motivations. We also have Yvonne Strahovski, Pratt’s commanding officer in the future, and she brings the drama. She’s excellent and has acted for a while now, but with television shows like Handmaid’s Tale and Chuck. I hope we get her in more movies. The one complaint I have is with Betty Gilpin. She was awesome in The Hunt, and she’s good here, but the film does nothing with her. It does more with Pratt’s father, JK Simmons, who is also great here as always.
It’s exclusive for Amazon, but I would’ve gladly seen it in theaters. They have announced a sequel, which is a shame since the movie works perfectly as a standalone. We always have to set up franchises these days, but hopefully, the sequel will be as good as this one.
Would I watch it again? Most definitely. It’s a good entertaining story with excellent action and some surprisingly good drama. I know many people actually hate it, but this one just did it for me. I guess I’m a sucker for this kind of movie.
