Hawkeye Season One Review.
Best Marvel show on Disney Plus

Finally, something on Disney Plus is worth watching aside from The Mandalorian. I don’t have a subscription, and I’ll never get one since I feel that the fee isn’t worth the lack of entertainment. There are too many streaming services these days, so it makes it more difficult for me to decide which one is worthy and unworthy of my time.
Doing a Hawkeye show is questionable since he is one of the most uninteresting characters in the Avenger’s heroes lineup. It’s nothing against the character himself or Jeremy Renner’s performance. Those are both fine, but it’s just the writing of the character wasn’t as focused on like the other characters. He got better as the series progressed but was still one of the lesser heroes. This is Disney, so they’ll make a show based on any of their properties and give it a movie-like budget these days. Hawkeye is good, unlike some of the other shows I’ve watched on Disney Plus.
It’s Christmas time in New York. Hawkeye and his kids are celebrating the holiday by watching the Avenger’s broadway musical called “Roger’s: The Musical.” The musical is abysmal. It wouldn’t surprise me if Disney makes this someday, and then I’ll vomit. We also have Kate Bishop, a young privileged prodigy whose favorite Avenger happens to be Hawkeye since she saw him when she was younger fighting those aliens in New York during the events in the first Avengers movie. She’s trained in several fighting styles, fencing and is pretty good with a bow. Hawkeye is perfect with a bow, as is Kate for the most part. So Obviously, they have to team up.
The way they do that involve’s Hawkeye’s past as the Ronin. He made a lot of enemies during that time when he had that embarrassing haircut. Somehow, his suit gets auctioned off at a private, dirty-rich auction during a clean-rich Christmas party. Kate Bishop and her mom played by the always reliable Vera Farmiga, are in attendance. Things go awry, and Kate Bishop ends up wearing the suit to take down some bad guys, and now the criminal world thinks Ronin is back. Kate is a target, and it’s up to Hawkeye to protect her and hopefully put his assassin days in the past for good.
This is a six-episode season that probably should’ve been just a movie since not much happens, but it is entertaining. It’s fast-paced, and the action is done pretty well. I love those trick Pym arrows. As far as the Disney Plus Marvel shows go, I’ve only watched Wanda Vision and Falcon And Winter Soldier. They were both completely awful shows and a waste of time. These shows came out when I was really disliking Marvel, so I didn’t even bother checking out Loki or Marvel’s What If. I also refuse to watch Black Widow or Eternals since they both look like steaming hot garbage to me. I don’t want to waste my time. Shang Chi was also terrible, but then came along Hawkeye and Spiderman: No Way Home, so I guess I’m back to liking Marvel again. For now.
Hawkeye’s cast is excellent. We have Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, whom I’ve always liked ever since I saw him in 28 Weeks Later. He plays the part well and has plenty to do. I liked how he is deaf now because of all the action he has endured over the franchise. They do it in a clever way of showing a quick montage of all the explosions and falls surrounding him during his missions. Hailee Steinfeld plays Kate Bishop, and she’s been fantastic ever since her oscar-nominated role in True Grit. Since then, many of her movie roles have been a joke, but not her. She’s a new Marvel character that I would like to see more of, and I’m sure we will.
Another cast member I have to mention is Alaqua Cox, who is out for revenge against Ronin. She has excellent depth as a character and is played pretty well by her. Then I have to mention Tony Dalton, who plays Kate Bishop’s possible stepfather. This dude needs to be in more stuff. I only know him from Better Call Saul, where he plays an amazing villain in probably the best show running on television right now. He can be funny as much as being sadistic at the same time. Great performing actor.
SPOILERS BEGIN. There are some surprise guests in this show as well. If you’ve seen Black Widow or just read online spoilers like I did, you’ll already know who shows up. Scarlett Johansson’s sister Yelena played by Florence Pugh in Black Widow, appears since she wants to kill Hawkeye after getting hired by someone who lied about the details surrounding her sister’s death in Avengers: Endgame. They still don’t explain why this organization wants Hawkeye dead, but it could come up in season two. Florence Pugh is fine as the character, but only in small doses. I wouldn’t want to watch an entire movie with her as the main character since her type of humor gets old to me.
Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin also shows up rather late, in my opinion. It would’ve been better if he was introduced midway through instead of the finale, but I guess they needed a bigger surprise than Yelena. This is a PG version of Kingpin compared to how he was on the Netflix Daredevil show, but I’m glad Marvel is finally connecting the universe. D’Onofrio is also exceptional in the role, and I wouldn’t want to see anyone else as the character. SPOILERS END.
Would I watch it again? Actually yes. It’s more tricky to rewatch seasons since you might rewatch a few episodes and then move on. This is a quick show without many episodes, which confuses me as to why they didn’t make a movie. Maybe because it doesn’t move the marvel universe forward, and that’s fine as long as it’s entertaining. I would say it’s the best Marvel show on Disney Plus that I’ve seen. Now I’m back to watching Marvel again, but I’ll still be picky when choosing what to watch. I’ll watch something like Dr. Strange 2 or She-Hulk, but I won’t even bother with something like Ms. Marvel or Agatha Harkness. Life is too short.
